The Rosh Hashonah Meal

For those of you who are interested ...I gave an entire menu planned for my Rosh Hashonah feast and wondered what I would actually come up with. Well here it is...I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Joanna made the gorgeous - and very delicious Challah which I believe is from the Norene Gilletz Second Helpings Please! It's been a family tradition since the girls were tiny.

Esau's Lentil Soup with Meatballs
from Cucina Ebraica

We did without the fish & salad course altogether, having eaten way too much of way too many delicious dishes the previous two nights.

St. Tropez Chicken
from Feast: Food to Celebrate Life was tender and sweet and perfect.

Peas with Caramelized Shallots

No recipe really, just gently saute about 1/2 cup of thinly sliced shallots with 1 tsp olive oil and 1 tsp brown sugar for 10 minutes or so over low heat, stirring occasionally, then add them to 1 medium sized bag of frozen baby peas, that have been cooked in boiling water for 3 minutes and drained. Toss, season and serve - easy and so colorful.

Potato & Sweet Potato Galette
This time I made it without the spinach, but no time for a photo.

Roasted Squash with Brown Sugar & Balsamic Apple Cider Vinegar

Again, no recipe (and apparently no photo either). Just roast peeled 1" chunks of squash tossed with 1 tsp olive oil and 1 tbsp each brown sugar and vinegar at 400°F/200°C for 20 minutes or until they are soft on the inside and starting to brown on the outside. Toss occasionally.

Normandy Apple Tart
from Baking: From My Home to Yours
Pretty spectacular and my grandson loved the apple sauce filling.

Frankly, my family liked it better than mine. It was moist and delicious and perfect for dessert. I still like mine for breakfast or a mid-morning snack.

So that was the meal...and now we're done for another week.

Katiez, thanks and don't be fooled...the challah is really easy. It just takes some time to let the dough rise.

Cara, Windy, thanks and you can cook it up too!

Deborah, thanks and let me know how the challah turns out.

Alisha, thanks and shana tova too!
