Trust me when I say, I love this time of year for local produce...everything so beautiful, everything so delicious. My personal favorites....corn on the cob right off the farm, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, pears, sweet onions, and definitely...tomatoes!
Ever notice in the off seasons how food might look good, but taste like wood? Especially tomatoes. There was one farmer at Hubbards who sucked me in, not just with how pretty his tomatoes looked (at the top of the post), but with the samples he had for us to taste....so sweet, I finally understand why tomatoes are considered fruit. I couldn't wait to get home to eat a bowlful while I was putting away the rest of my goodies...just a drizzle of good olive oil, some shredded fresh basil and a sprinkling of salt and pepper.
...and later I whipped up a batch of Fried Green Tomatoes...another of my favorite late summer dishes.
Soon enough I will have to control myself in making batches of tomato sauce because I don't really have much space to store it.
So what's your favorite summer vegetable?

Tomatoes have definitely become my favorite. I never knew I loved tomatoes until this year, when I was able to have them fresh grown. I also discovered the Caprese combo and have made Caprese pasta and sandwiches. Can't get enough.
Zucchini has been a great discovery too.
Thanks for reminding me, I need to try to do the fried green before summer is entirely gone...
I love these not-red tomato dishes and I'm hankering for some of those fried green tomatoes right now.
I love the looks of your fried green tomatoes - absolutely delish!
Thanks ladies for dropping by. There is something so comforting about fried green tomatoes...not sure what, but it's definitely there.

Kosher dills from green tomatoes!
We don't get corn here, so I choose tomatoes.
Judith, you must be psychic! I love kosher green tomato dills. They're my favorite and not easy to find here in Halifax. So thank you for the recipe!
