Another Mini Adventure on the Bedford Highway

Once again I took Me, Myself & I on a little expedition. Those of you who've been reading my blog, know that I love interesting foods and finding the best ingredients I can. So you probably are wondering what I'll do in Halifax. Surely fish & chips, chowders and even lobster can't make up for the variety of foods in Toronto. (I've been obsessing about finding Kozlik's Mustards, I admit.) Well, you needn't worry about how I'll manage....

This time I went to Pete's Frootique in the Sunnyside Mall in Bedford. I've been to the one in downtown Halifax and compare it to Pusitari's Fine Foods in Toronto. This one is like Whole Foods, Pusitari's, Bruno's and any other high end purveyor of extraordinary food, but like all of them COMBINED! I'm not kidding!

Before you even enter the store itself there is a food court...well, not your usual food court, I guarantee. I stopped at Presto Pasta Works (I couldn't resist-not just for the name). Check out the soups...

and the salads....

I had the most delicious curried mushroom and lentil soup I've ever eaten - no exaggeration! and some cheese and potato perogi that were wonderful.

Oh...and see all my favorite magazines? I was having trouble finding my usual favorites in downtonw Halifax, but there they were at the newstand right beside the food court. But I digress...

And then I saw someone eating a giant slice of the most gorgeous pizza ever...

Pesto, spinach, sautteed wild mushrooms and some goat (I think) cheese. I wanted to walk right up to her and take a bite! I was mature and just took these photos instead. This one is a vegetarian one of all sorts of roasted veggies...

I can't wait to go back. But on to the real shopping experience. Check out the butcher counter. It goes on forever (really, it went on further than my camera could get without doing some panarama shot).

And fresh produce that took my breath away. This shot is of just one small corner of the produce section.

And did I mention my obsession with Kozlik's mustards...well, they had at least 6 varieties (I bought two of my favorites - Balsamic Figs & Dates, and Lime & Honey).

So with arms laden, I headed out, bypassing all kinds of fresh fish and seafood and imported, organic everything you can think of. And these baby eggplants...(the three of them fit in the palm of my hand)...will be in tonight's pasta dinner - Spaghetti with Tuna Sauce (I'm sneaking in the eggplant)!

I wonder what adventure I'll go on tomorrow! Don't forget about Presto Pasta Night this Friday. What will you be making?

Tigerfish - I could always be your surrogate and have some for you.

What will it be....smoked turkey with beans?...roasted tomato & basil?...salmon dill chowder?...carrot with ginger?
