One Crazy Week and A&W Treat

What a crazy week, on the one hand it seems to have zipped by and I had a huge deadline for Friday. On the other hand it seems to have gone on forever. That little cold that started three weeks ago has blossomed into bronchitis and continued to zap my energy.

By Thursday I decided that chicken soup and vitamin C was not enough and trekked over to my doctor looking for some more scientific magic. On my way home, clutching my antibiotics, I stopped off at one of my favorite grocery stores to pick up something healthful and easy to make for supper. The salmon filets looked beautifully pink and juicy and would taste delicious after roasting on a bed of cilantro. The bag of baby spinach and some mixed mushrooms would sauté up in a minute. I was all set.

Until I got home, and was completely exhausted. That delicious dinner didn’t seem so easy any more and all I wanted (I’m ashamed to say) was for my Honey to pick up some fast food burgers and onion rings on the way home. Not so healthful, I know, but somehow comforting, like when you hear songs that you loved in your youth or see some retro clothes you can’t believe you wore and thought so cool. It just takes you back in time to when life was simple and your parents took care of everything.

When I was a growing up in Montreal – before McDonalds, believe it or not, there were a couple of choices. One was to drive to the Orange Julep which was this giant orange in the middle of a parking lot where you drove to not through with cute car hops in crazy little skirts who brought the food on a tray to your car. It was quite the teenage hang out. The Julep still exists in Montreal and we often go there when we visit, for old time sake. Their signature drink, the julep is wonderfully creamy. The other option was A& W for teen burgers, onion rings and root beer served in a frosty mug you could hardly lift. There actually is an outlet in the gas station near our house. All that’s missing is the frosty mugs. So that’s what we had for dinner. Not quite as good as a hug and kiss on the forehead from mom, but close.

We had Orange Julius in Southeran California, but I'm sure it's the same. and A&W root beer! I love it. Unfortunately, i can't drink it any more because it has gluten in it! But still.

Take care of your bronchitis, okay? I've had pneumonia more than I want to say, and it's really not pleasant. Take care of yourself. We'll be here reading, when you can write.
