Practice for No BBQ - Pan Grilled Seared Tuna & Shrimp

Today was a milestone at our house...or rather we got the key to our new place-which is a major milestone. Tomorrow we get the phone and next week, all our STUFF will arrive. I can't wait. Our place is wonderful and I'll be going on and on about it soon enough. The one drawback...no place to barbecue. We're on the third floor of a lovely converted convent and there are no balconies. This will be a challenge given that in Toronto we barbecued even in the winter.

No worries...I'll be using my trusty grill pan (as soon as it arrives) and perhaps my next kitchen toy will be an indoor grill. I did a practice run searing tuna and the verdict was....well...everyone liked it so much they licked the plate clean and asked for seconds. No one seemed to notice that it wasn't barbecued.

Lemon Chili Shrimp & Seared Tuna

I served it over mashed sweet potatoes seasoned with thyme. The sweetness will cut the spice of the sauce and the mash-factor will absorb it. Since the tuna & shrimp marinade had Kalyn's favorite herb - cilantro, I thought I'd share it with Weekend Herb Blogging. What are your suggestions for indoor grilling.

I love the seared tuna! We can't ger raw shrimp but the tuna is usually good so I can do 'half'.
I'm not certain our marriage could survive a 'no-grill' situation so I have no suggestions...

Ruth, this sounds just delicious. I have one of those cast-iron grill pans with ridges, which I absolutely love. I've also got a great rotisserie which is fantastic for kabobs. Look forward to hearing more about the new place.

Ladies, I just got the keys and took a quick peek. It looks lovely but I haven't quite figured out where to put all my kitchen toys.

My cast iron grill pan is still packed but Joanna has a really lovely Paderno heavy bottomed skillet that did the trick.

And Katiez...I certainly hope MY marriage can survive without a bbq.

I'm sure you and your grill pan will soon become one. The seafood feast bodes very well!

This sounds great. One question: how hot is it? On a scale of 1-10 with 1 being not at all hot and 10 being get the fire extinguisher hot.

Oh my gosh - this looks so inviting!

On a scale of 1-10 it was probably a 4. Next time I'd definitely add more heat to the mix.

Looks delicious. I've heard of countertop barbecues, but I can't imagine they're all that good, so I think it's the grill pan or nothin'...

The marinade sounds amazing. It has been a while since I have done a tuna steak. I now see a tuna steak coming to me in the near future.

Thanks for sharing the marinade!! We love grilling, even in winter, just storms can forbid doing it; so I have no idea, but indoor grilling seems an alternative.. Best wishes and a good start in a new town!! :)
