The Visit, The Gifts, The Food - Osso Buco & Risotto alla Milanese

Joanna and Ezra arrived Wednesday night from a month long vacation in Mexico and they look happy, healthy and very tanned. I really intended to write this post Thursday morning but…the plane was an hour late arriving and then we had to wait an additional two hours because the plane arrived at one terminal and the baggage when to another. At least that’s the story we got. It seems ridiculous to me, but what do I know. Anyway, enough ranting but we didn’t get home until about 11 p.m. (which is usually past my bed time) and we had to see all their fabulous purchases – some silver jewelry, red cowboy boots and a cowboy hat for Jo, some fabulous masks for their collection, other things, and most importantly, my gift.

These hand made clay bowls and platter, which in addition to just being beautiful serving pieces, can be used in the oven or on top of the stove. I love them and we had plans (Joanna and I) to make some Osso Buco and Risotto alla Milanese for dinner Thursday because they will look awesome in the dishes.

Well, Thursday didn’t turn out exactly as we planned, although Jo and I did go grocery shopping. The thing is, both our men we under the weather (different ailments) and we didn’t get much sleep either, so by the time we got back from doing groceries, all we could manage food wise through the day was small snacks like this…

… plus a variety of cheeses and baguettes, as we watched some movies and then had sandwiches for “dinner” – I use the term very loosely.

Yesterday was much better though and we finally got to really use the dishes.

Today, before they head home for Halifax, we plan on seeing a movie (probably Munich) and eating at their favorite Korean restaurant, Sejong House. A great end to a lovely visit - even if it didn't quite start out as planned.

Great pictures! I hope I didn't destroy my keyboard drooling uncontrollably all over it. Clay cookware is incredible. My Mom always made her roast beef and chicken in covered clay dishes from Mexico. I think it must be similar to cast iron cookware where the flavor soaks in and enhances everything you cook in it. Especially good with squirts of citrus on the meat. You are an ambitious cook, thanks for the recipes!

What a wonderful gift they gave you, Ruth. The color is just gorgeous. And I'm looking forward to reading many posts about food served in those dishes.

What a treat to have your daughter with you. Enjoy!
