Not Just Another Apple Cake

A couple of weeks ago the family (Boaz's first, I might add - unless you count last year in mummy's tummy) went apple picking in the Annapolis Valley. We had a great time which I wrote about for Food for Thought - Foodtv's blog -check it out.

Here it is two weeks and several dishes later - Apple Crisp(more than once), the Normandy Apple Tart, plus lots of munching right off the plate...and I still have some left which I wanted to use for a special apple dessert for this week's Jewish Holiday - Yom Kippur, when we fast from sundown to sundown. The Break Fast meal in our home is usually dairy and I wanted to make something appley to round it out. (Stay tuned for the entire menu tomorrow.) My first choice was a Polish Apple Tart from A Treasury of Jewish Holiday Baking but it would have taken too long. Don't whine...I promise to make it next week.

So I decided on another option - Everybody's Jewish Apple Cake. Truth be told, I've never made a traditional apple cake and I don't remember my mother making one either. But my mother-in-law would never make a Friday Shabbat meal without one. So, given that the in-laws are in Toronto, and we are here in Halifax, I thought I'd make one and think of them whenever I bite into a slice.

Ooooh, Apple Cake! I love it and haven't had it in years! Just the thing to do with those slightly-green apples I picked yesterday!

Deborah, I know what you mean. The cake did smell divine in the oven.

Katiez, it was very tasty. Hardly any was left over for my morning breakfast treat. Oh well, I'll just have to make another one.
